Device-based cosmetology methods

Your cosmetologist chooses a method or a combination of methods after examining your skin.

How device-based treatments work

At the Viva Clinic aesthetic medicine center, device-based treatments are done by cosmetologists, and each skin concern has its own method.

For skin tone, there are muscle stimulation and RF lifting. During muscle stimulation, weak electrical pulses make the facial muscles contract. This helps maintain muscle and skin tone. RF lifting heats the deeper layers of the skin with radiofrequency energy, and the heat stimulates collagen production. It’s done on the face, neck, chest and also on the body.

To help beneficial ingredients get deeper into the skin, there are ultrasound phonophoresis and oxygen and needle-free mesotherapy. In phonophoresis, a serum is applied to the skin and ultrasound helps it penetrate deeper. In oxygen mesotherapy, the cocktail is delivered onto the skin with a jet of oxygen. Needle-free mesotherapy uses electroporation: short electrical pulses briefly make the skin more permeable, and the mesotherapy cocktail gets in without a needle. Your cosmetologist chooses the serum or cocktail for your skin’s needs. Injectable mesotherapy is done by a cosmetic doctor.

Diamond microdermabrasion resurfaces the skin with a diamond-tipped attachment and removes dead skin cells. It’s done on the face, neck, chest and back. This renews the skin mechanically, without the acid solutions used in chemical peels. Cryotherapy works on the skin with cold: the blood vessels first narrow and then widen, and blood flow in the skin increases. It’s recommended, among other things, for oily skin care.

Hydropeeling counts as device-based facial cleansing. How it differs from ultrasonic, manual and non-traumatic cleansing is explained in our article on which facial cleansing to choose.

How a session goes and how many you need

Before your first treatment, the cosmetologist examines your skin, asks what’s bothering you and chooses a method or a combination of methods. Diamond microdermabrasion, for example, is done on its own to cleanse the skin or as preparation for another procedure.

What you feel depends on the method. During muscle stimulation you feel tingling and muscle contractions, during RF lifting you feel warmth, and afterwards your skin may be slightly red. Diamond microdermabrasion doesn’t need anesthesia. Mild redness is possible afterwards, depending on how sensitive your skin is and how deep the resurfacing goes. Your skin is more sensitive to the sun after the procedure, so apply SPF every day.

Your cosmetologist decides how many sessions you need and how far apart. Some treatments are done once, while treatments for skin tone usually take a course. Device-based methods can be combined with other procedures and care, such as classic cosmetology, and your cosmetologist puts the plan together. Before a celebration, oxygen mesotherapy is a good choice, and it’s also one of our SOS treatments.

Who device-based methods are not suitable for

Each method has its own limits, so the cosmetologist checks for contraindications before your first session. Be sure to tell them if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, metal implants in the treatment area, cancer or acute skin inflammation. Also mention any medication you take, and any peel, cleansing or injections you’ve had recently, since you may need a break between procedures. This determines which methods you can have and which are better replaced.

If you develop blisters after a treatment, or pain and swelling get worse, contact your cosmetologist or a doctor the same day.

Questions about device-based cosmetology

Do device-based treatments hurt?

There's usually no severe pain. During muscle stimulation you feel tingling and your muscles contracting, during RF lifting you feel warmth, and diamond microdermabrasion doesn't need anesthesia. If the sensations become unpleasant, tell your cosmetologist right away.

How many device-based sessions will I need?

It depends on the method and your skin, so your cosmetologist decides how many sessions you need. Some treatments are done once, such as diamond microdermabrasion before another procedure. Treatments for skin tone, including muscle stimulation and RF lifting, are usually done as a course.

What is needle-free mesotherapy?

It's a treatment in which a mesotherapy cocktail gets into the skin without a needle. In electroporation, short electrical pulses briefly make the skin more permeable to active ingredients. In oxygen mesotherapy, the cocktail is delivered onto the skin with a jet of oxygen. Both suit people who don't want injections.

Can I have device-based treatments during pregnancy?

Some methods, including those that use electric current and RF lifting, are not done during pregnancy. Be sure to tell your cosmetologist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding: they will check for contraindications and suggest which care you can have right now.
