How a laser hair removal session works

Before your first procedure, you come in for a consultation. A certified cosmetic doctor assesses your skin, identifies your hair type, checks for contraindications and sets the laser parameters. If you take any medication, mention it. You can consult cosmetic doctor Nataliia Cherepii, Candidate of Medical Sciences, about laser hair removal.

We use the D-Las 100 mix diode laser made by the Ukrainian manufacturer Medicalaser. It has three wavelengths, 755, 808 and 1064 nm, and the handpiece’s working surface is cooled to −5 °C. The laser targets hair follicles and works on different hair types, including ingrown hairs. During the session, you wear protective glasses, and cooling switches on automatically with each pulse.

Spatulas and gel are single-use, the handpiece is wrapped in protective film, and work surfaces are sterilized regularly. Visits are by appointment, with no waiting in line. Clients come to us from Netishyn, Shepetivka, Khmelnytskyi, the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne regions and from all over Ukraine.

How many laser hair removal sessions you need

One session is not enough. The laser only works on hair in the active growth phase, and treated hair falls out gradually over 14–20 days. That’s why hair removal is done as a course.

Sessions are 3 weeks to 2 months apart, and the gap gets longer each time. A course usually takes several sessions, up to 10, over 6–12 months. It’s best not to interrupt it, so you keep the result. How many sessions you need depends on your hair structure and color. The doctor will assess this at the consultation.

How to care for your skin afterward

After the session, your doctor explains how to care for your skin. The main rules:

  • for the first 3–5 days, use the skin-recovery products your doctor recommends;
  • for 3 days, avoid hot baths and showers, saunas, pools and massage, as well as products with alcohol or abrasive particles;
  • for 2 days, don’t rub the skin with a washcloth;
  • for up to 2 weeks, avoid tanning, and apply sunscreen with SPF 35 or higher when you go outside.

Questions about laser hair removal

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most clients describe it as a light tingling. Cooling switches on automatically with each laser pulse. Everyone's pain threshold is different, so if you're sensitive to pain, your skin can be numbed with a cream or spray before the session.

How is laser hair removal different from sugaring and waxing?

The laser acts on the hair follicle, while sugaring and waxing remove hair mechanically and leave the follicles untouched. That's why their results are temporary and the procedure has to be repeated every few weeks. Electrolysis is quite painful and takes a lot of time, because each hair is treated separately.

What happens during a laser hair removal session at Viva Clinic?

You put on protective glasses, and the cosmetic doctor moves the handpiece of the D-Las 100 mix diode laser over the area. The laser works in pulses, and cooling switches on automatically with each one. Spatulas and gel are single-use, the handpiece is wrapped in protective film, and the doctor sets the laser parameters in advance, at the consultation.

How long does a laser hair removal session take?

It depends on the area. The upper lip takes about 10 minutes, the bikini area up to 20 minutes. Before your first session you need a consultation: the cosmetic doctor checks your skin and hair, looks for contraindications and sets the laser parameters.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

A course usually takes several sessions, up to 10, over 6–12 months. The laser only works on hair in the active growth phase: the first session removes 15–30% of the growing hair in the area, and treated hair falls out gradually over 14–20 days. How many sessions you need depends on your hair structure and color, which the doctor assesses at the consultation.

How long should I wait between laser hair removal sessions?

Sessions are 3 weeks to 2 months apart, and the gap gets longer each time because there's less hair after every session. It's best not to interrupt the course, so you keep the result. The full course takes 6–12 months.

How long do laser hair removal results last?

After a full course, the effect lasts 3–10 years, depending on your skin. After that, you can repeat the course. To keep the result, don't interrupt the course and stick to the intervals between sessions.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

For 2 weeks before, avoid tanning, including tanning beds, and don't wax, sugar, tweeze or use an epilator; shaving is fine. There should also be 2 weeks between your last dose of antibiotics and the session. For 3 days before, don't apply products with alcohol or oil to the area. Shave on the day or no earlier than 12 hours before. Come with clean skin, no deodorant or makeup.

How do I care for my skin after laser hair removal?

For the first 3–5 days, use the skin-recovery products your doctor recommends. For 3 days, avoid hot baths and showers, saunas, pools and massage, as well as products with alcohol or abrasive particles, and for 2 days, don't rub the skin with a washcloth. For up to 2 weeks, avoid tanning, and apply sunscreen with SPF 35 or higher when you go outside.

Who can't have laser hair removal?

It isn't done for people with cancer, decompensated diabetes or an individual intolerance to the procedure, or on blonde or gray hair. It has to be postponed, or done only after a doctor's consultation, in case of pregnancy, skin conditions, a fresh tan (under 2 weeks), multiple moles in the treatment area, varicose veins, a tendency to keloid scars, a cold, flu or other respiratory infection, an allergy flare-up, or burns, abrasions or scratches on the skin.
