Types of mesotherapy

The cocktail formula is chosen for your concern.

Mesotherapy or biorevitalization: what’s the difference

Both are injections into the skin, and at the Viva Clinic aesthetic medicine center both are done by a cosmetic doctor. Biorevitalization uses hyaluronic acid products, and its main goal is to hydrate the skin. A mesotherapy cocktail may contain vitamins, amino acids, hyaluronic acid and other substances. The doctor chooses the formula for a specific concern, and mesotherapy is also done on the scalp. There’s more on the difference in our article what biorevitalization is.

Facial mesotherapy: with and without needles

Injectable facial mesotherapy is done to support skin tone and a healthy complexion. Before the procedure, the skin is cleansed and treated with an antiseptic, and then the doctor injects the cocktail with a very fine needle in small amounts. Small bumps, redness or bruises may remain after the injections and usually go away within a few days, so don’t schedule the procedure right before a celebration. On a specialist’s advice, manual facial cleansing is combined with mesotherapy.

Oxygen and needle-free mesotherapy are part of device-based cosmetology. Device-based methods have their own contraindications, and the doctor checks them separately.

Scalp mesotherapy for hair loss

Hair falls out for different reasons. Hair loss can be hereditary, or hair can thin after an illness or stress, because of iron deficiency or because of thyroid disease. Whether mesotherapy will help depends on the cause, so the doctor first finds out why your hair is falling out. The doctor examines your scalp, asks about your diet, medication and past illnesses and orders tests if needed. You can have them done at the clinic’s own Diagnost-Lab laboratory. How low iron affects your hair and how you feel is explained in our article what a ferritin test shows.

If the cause is an illness, a dermatologist or endocrinologist prescribes treatment, and mesotherapy, when it makes sense, is planned alongside it. Viva Clinic cosmetologists are trained in trichology. See a dermatologist without delay if your hair falls out in clumps or patches, round bald spots appear, or your scalp itches, flakes or hurts.

How to prepare and what to do after mesotherapy

Tell your doctor about any medication you take, especially anything that affects blood clotting, and about allergies and previous treatments. Don’t stop medicines prescribed by another doctor on your own. Mesotherapy is a paid treatment.

After the procedure:

  • skip makeup on the first day, and don’t touch the injection area unless you need to;
  • for the first 48 hours, don’t massage the area, avoid saunas, bathhouses, pools and hot baths, and put off intense workouts;
  • avoid tanning, and apply SPF to your face when you go outside;
  • after facial mesotherapy, put off dental work that may make your gums bleed for 3–4 weeks.

Your doctor will tell you after the procedure when you can wash your hair after scalp mesotherapy.

Call the doctor who did the procedure right away if the skin in the injection area turns white, blue or blotchy, or the pain gets worse. If your vision suddenly worsens, your eye hurts, you see double or your eyelid droops, call an ambulance on 103. Also call 103 if your face, tongue or throat swells and breathing becomes difficult. And if, days or weeks later, the skin in the injection area becomes hot and red, painful lumps or pus appear, or you develop a fever, contact a doctor the same day.

Questions about mesotherapy

How is mesotherapy different from biorevitalization?

In the product and the goal. Biorevitalization uses hyaluronic acid products to hydrate the skin. A mesotherapy cocktail may contain vitamins, amino acids, hyaluronic acid and other substances, and the doctor chooses it for a specific concern. Mesotherapy is also done on the scalp.

Does mesotherapy help with hair loss?

It depends on what's causing it, so a doctor finds the cause first. Hair can fall out because of iron deficiency, thyroid disease or a hereditary tendency, among other reasons, and some of these need separate treatment. The doctor decides whether scalp mesotherapy makes sense after an examination and, if needed, tests.

How many mesotherapy sessions do I need?

It's usually a course of several sessions. A cosmetic doctor decides on the cocktail, the number of sessions and the breaks between them after examining you, depending on the condition of your skin or hair. After the course, the doctor will tell you whether you need maintenance sessions.

Does mesotherapy hurt?

You'll feel the injections, but the cocktail goes in through a very fine needle, and there's usually no severe pain. How it feels depends on the area and your pain threshold. If you'd rather avoid injections, ask about oxygen or needle-free mesotherapy, which use no needles.

Who shouldn't have mesotherapy?

The procedure isn't done, or is postponed, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with herpes, inflammation or broken skin in the injection area, an acute infection or fever, blood clotting disorders, anticoagulant use or an allergy to any component of the cocktail. Your doctor will check the full list of contraindications at the consultation.
